10 development projects to watch in Northern Virginia

Big development projects routinely take years or decades to come into their own, even when pandemics don’t turn the world upside-down partway through. Even so, “pause” feels like a word that frequently hangs in the air these days.

It’s unwise to draw sweeping generalizations, but maybe call this past year the year of the development hiccup, or the parade of megaprojects marking time.

Some projects are plodding along with most certainty than others. But, it seems to us, several noteworthy examples — Amazon.com Inc.’s PenPlace, JBG Smith Properties’ Potomac Yard, a couple sites with big potential in Loudoun County — stand out for having been put into a holding pattern, in some cases extending the state they’ve already been in for a very long time.

With interest rates ticking down and the world seemingly coming to some sort of peace with the new normal of hybrid work — Amazon’s recently calling everyone back five days a week being a very notable exception — maybe some of these will get new wind in their sails.

Below, we offer 10 significant projects to watch across the Northern Virginia, ranging from oldies-but-goodies to one hot off the press. Washington Business Journal

The year is coming to a close, but Texas job growth isn’t finished yet. A new forecast from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas indicates Texas will end the year with over 348,000 new jobs, with almost 40,000 of those added last month alone.

The report from the Federal Reserve states that the bank’s forecast is based on “an average of four models that include projected national gross domestic product, oil futures prices and the Texas and U.S. leading indexes.”

The forecast estimates jobs will increase by 2.5% by the end of 2024, with 348,900 jobs added in the state this year. The forecast also has a confidence band of 2.3% to 2.7%. Employment in December 2024 is expected to hit 14.4 million jobs, with 3% growth expected for the remainder of the year. San Antonio Business Journal
