Construction falls to lowest level in almost a decade; trophy office space gets more expensive

It has been almost a decade since Atlanta’s construction pipeline for office buildings was this slow. It’s putting a premium on new, trophy space.

At the end of the second quarter, just 1.56 million square feet was being built across metro Atlanta, according to commercial real estate services firm Transwestern. That’s about enough to fill the 55-story Bank of America Plaza and a few additional floors. It’s the lowest amount of new construction since the end of 2015, Transwestern said.

About a quarter of that space is pre-leased.
