Pharma exec talks construction, hiring for new North Carolina plant

Now that the dust has settled on news that its first North American manufacturing plant will be in North Carolina, Kyowa Kirin is ready to focus on its next steps in attracting a workforce and getting the site ready.

With its $200 million investment on 75 acres in Sanford, Kyowa Kirin has pledged to create 102 full-time and high-paying jobs. The pharmaceutical company is based in Tokyo and makes drugs to treat rare diseases, including one to address symptoms related to Parkinson’s disease

The decision to select North Carolina was due in large part to the region’s strong workforce, according to Paul Testa, the company’s executive vice president for supply chain and manufacturing in North America.

“The ultimate concern that we were really designing for success as it related to the whole project was about workforce availability,” Testa said in an exclusive interview with Triangle Business Journal. “… We’re comfortable with the labor market and the workforce capabilities in the Triangle area as well as the work that the state has done via the the big three universities (N.C. State, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill) and the community college network to be able to support future growth.”
