Solar overtook coal in energy production in Florida in 2023

While energy production in Florida is dominated by natural gas, solar-powered energy moved past coal in 2023 and into the third-highest source of power in the Sunshine State. Nuclear power was the second-highest, accounting for 11% of energy production.

Solar energy production in Florida has nearly quadrupled over the last five years. Nearly three-fourths of all solar power generated in Florida in 2023 was from electric utility companies. The next highest segment was residential, which accounted for just under 20% of Florida’s solar power last year.

Meanwhile, reliance on coal continues to drop in Florida. From 2014 to 2023, the number of megawatt hours from coal decreased from 52 million to just under 12 million. Over that same time, solar grew from 361,000 to 17.8 million.
